Howells Architecture + DesignWe converted an underused back yard into a modern outdoor living space. Functions include a cedar soaking tub, outdoor shower, fire pit, and dining area. Joanne Alderson DesignMy own Cotswold courtyard garden in a simple contemporary style. It has a strong formal structure that is designed to work throughout the seasons. I used mature trees in huge corten steel planters to create structure & shade in this south facing garden & added pretty planting to soften it & add seasonal interest.
June Scott DesignThis front yard features a seating area and jar fountain, ringed by aromatic native plantings of California Lilac, Manzanita, Cleveland Sage. A meadow-style planting of native sedge grasses create soft look in the foreground, and new concrete pavers add a modern touch. We also believe the project’s driveway to be among the prettiest we’ve created or seen: a ribbon of stones and grasses now meanders along a Hollywood-style center planting area.
Kate Gould GardensThis striking small garden has been designed to provide a full picture from the open plan interior living space. An internal kitchen/ dining area flows seamlessly into a generously proportioned outdoor entertaining space featuring a large built-in seating area, barbecue and fridge.
Polished concrete and grey tones carried through from the house are accessorised with contrasting colour pops provided by the soft furnishings and the surrounding greenery. To ensure the garden is low maintenance, artificial lawn is utilised alongside concrete pavers and gravel. Predominantly evergreen planting ensures a permanent sense of privacy and seclusion, even in the winter months when a lot of gardens can begin to feel bare and overlooked.

Stephanie D PooleSticks on Fire (Euphorbia tirucalli) in a small pot are very drought tolerant. The color tends to fade closer to yellow in the summer, and becomes redder in the winter and color is always best when grown in full sun.
