The orchid conservatory, a four walled trellis structure, was built as a zen mediation space for the owner who has a great passion for orchids. The orchid conservatory is a beautiful structure that features four walls of trellises to display orchids, an outdoor shower, lovely seating area, gates on both sides, and a relaxing bronze Cupid fountain that can be heard from the bathtub in the master bath. With ample space, orchids can be planted in floor pots, or hung from the substantial lattice structures with oval portholes.
The space steps down into a beautiful courtyard in the front of the home enhancing it calming effect. Fragrant flowering Plumeria trees nestle the structure tightly providing a stunning backdrop of color, so indicative of the tropics. The subtle sound of the fountain completes the bath for your senses.

Large monolithic architectural details are something we try
and bring into all our projects, it’s these details that allow us
to be looser with wilder with our planting palettes and for
the outcome to still feel considered. In this case, the benches allowed us to terrace the site creating activated zones to higher use of the functionality.

Wherever possible, plants native to the coastal areas of Southern California took precedence in the plant palette. Seaside Daisy (Erigeron glaucus) adores salt air and sandy soils - a perfect match for Santa Monica!
BE Landscape Design
This Beach beauty was long overdue for some attention. BE Landscape Design elongated the patio stairs, capping them with Montauk Blue tile and stacked stone. Antique black cobblestone was used for the new entrance walkway. Circular seating, a bubbling fountain, and raised veggie boxes have transformed this small front yard into a hub for relaxation and neighborhood visits.

A small residential, seaside property located on Saugatuck Island in Wesport was rebuilt after devastating damage by a hurricane. All that remained from the original property was the pool and pool terrace. The house was raised approximately 5 feet to meet new FEMA codes and rebuilt under the design team of the owner, a well-known interior designer. Barbara was part of the landscape architectural team that helped create a sense of place for the new house. The landscape design included the addition of new walls and steps to the front door, new custom fencing surrounding the pool, an outdoor shower, landscape lighting, a custom fountain in the back yard, a sandbox (used as a relief area for the dog) and all new plantings. She coordinating obtaining bids and then supervised installation of the project.
