A couple with two young children appointed FPA to refurbish a large semi detached Victorian house in Wimbledon Park. The property, arranged on four split levels, had already been extended in 2007 by the previous owners. The clients only wished to have the interiors updated to create a contemporary family room. However, FPA interpreted the brief as an opportunity also to refine the appearance of the existing side extension overlooking the patio and devise a new external family room, framed by red cedar clap boards, laid to suggest a chevron floor pattern. The refurbishment of the interior creates an internal contemporary family room at the lower ground floor by employing a simple, yet elegant, selection of materials as the instrument to redirect the focus of the house towards the patio and the garden: light coloured European Oak floor is paired with natural Oak and white lacquered panelling and Lava Stone to produce a calming and serene space. The solid corner of the extension is removed and a new sliding door set is put in to reduce the separation between inside and outside. Photo by Gianluca Maver

A beautifully crafted staircase featuring warm, natural wood treads paired with sleek black metal spindles for a clean, contemporary look. The cabinetry beneath is finished in a muted, charcoal tone that complements the stair’s modern lines while adding practical, discreet storage. Softly textured walls balance the strong architectural elements, creating a harmonious blend of warmth, functionality, and refined minimalism within the space.

During this renovation, it came to light that the stunning origional stone staircase and its ironwork railings were not safe, and that we would not be able to keep them. Although this was very sad news and also one that was going to impact hugely on the budget, we wanted to keep that staircase as a main feature of the renovation, and one that would pull all six floors of this property together. We employed local tradesman to produce this beautiful metal work. I'm so pleased with the end result, and I think the decision lose the banisters into the wall so as not to encroach on the turnspace but still keep it safe looks fantastic. Instead of using stone which would have been far too expansive and heavy, the stairs were cast on concrete, and then cleverly rendered with bullnose edging to give the impression of stone. This was very time consuming but so worth the time.

Photographer Derrick Godson Clients brief was to create a modern stylish interior in a predominantly grey colour scheme. We cleverly used different textures and patterns in our choice of soft furnishings to create an opulent modern interior. Entrance hall design includes a bespoke wool stair runner with bespoke stair rods, custom panelling, radiator covers and we designed all the interior doors throughout. The windows were fitted with remote controlled blinds and beautiful handmade curtains and custom poles. To ensure the perfect fit, we also custom made the hall benches and occasional chairs. The herringbone floor and statement lighting give this home a modern edge, whilst its use of neutral colours ensures it is inviting and timeless.

Tucked away in a row of terraced houses in Stoke Newington, this Victorian home has been renovated into a contemporary modernised property with numerous architectural glazing features to maximise natural light and give the appearance of greater internal space. 21st-Century living dictates bright sociable spaces that are more compatible with modern family life. A combination of different window features plus a few neat architectural tricks visually connect the numerous spaces… A contemporary glazed roof over the rebuilt side extension on the lower ground floor floods the interior of the property with glorious natural light. A large angled rooflight over the stairway is bonded to the end of the flat glass rooflights over the side extension. This provides a seamless transition as you move through the different levels of the property and directs the eye downwards into extended areas making the room feel much bigger. The SUNFLEX bifold doors at the rear of the kitchen leading into the garden link the internal and external spaces extremely well. More lovely light cascades in through the doors, whether they are open or shut. A cute window seat makes for a fabulous personal space to be able to enjoy the outside views within the comfort of the home too. A frameless glass balustrade descending the stairwell permits the passage of light through the property and whilst it provides a necessary partition to separate the areas, it removes any visual obstruction between them so they still feel unified. The clever use of space and adaption of flooring levels has significantly transformed the property, making it an extremely desirable home with fantastic living areas. No wonder it sold for nearly two million recently!

Entrance Hall and Staircase Interior Design Project in Richmond, West London We were approached by a couple who had seen our work and were keen for us to mastermind their project for them. They had lived in this house in Richmond, West London for a number of years so when the time came to embark upon an interior design project, they wanted to get all their ducks in a row first. We spent many hours together, brainstorming ideas and formulating a tight interior design brief prior to hitting the drawing board. Reimagining the interior of an old building comes pretty easily when you’re working with a gorgeous property like this. The proportions of the windows and doors were deserving of emphasis. The layouts lent themselves so well to virtually any style of interior design. For this reason we love working on period houses. It was quickly decided that we would extend the house at the rear to accommodate the new kitchen-diner. The Shaker-style kitchen was made bespoke by a specialist joiner, and hand painted in Farrow & Ball eggshell. We had three brightly coloured glass pendants made bespoke by Curiousa & Curiousa, which provide an elegant wash of light over the island. The initial brief for this project came through very clearly in our brainstorming sessions. As we expected, we were all very much in harmony when it came to the design style and general aesthetic of the interiors. In the entrance hall, staircases and landings for example, we wanted to create an immediate ‘wow factor’. To get this effect, we specified our signature ‘in-your-face’ Roger Oates stair runners! A quirky wallpaper by Cole & Son and some statement plants pull together the scheme nicely.

Grade II* Listed Medieval Barn Conversion, Cornwall
Grade II* Listed Medieval Barn Conversion, Cornwall
The Bazeley PartnershipThe Bazeley Partnership
One of the only surviving examples of a 14thC agricultural building of this type in Cornwall, the ancient Grade II*Listed Medieval Tithe Barn had fallen into dereliction and was on the National Buildings at Risk Register. Numerous previous attempts to obtain planning consent had been unsuccessful, but a detailed and sympathetic approach by The Bazeley Partnership secured the support of English Heritage, thereby enabling this important building to begin a new chapter as a stunning, unique home designed for modern-day living. A key element of the conversion was the insertion of a contemporary glazed extension which provides a bridge between the older and newer parts of the building. The finished accommodation includes bespoke features such as a new staircase and kitchen and offers an extraordinary blend of old and new in an idyllic location overlooking the Cornish coast. This complex project required working with traditional building materials and the majority of the stone, timber and slate found on site was utilised in the reconstruction of the barn. Since completion, the project has been featured in various national and local magazines, as well as being shown on Homes by the Sea on More4. The project won the prestigious Cornish Buildings Group Main Award for ‘Maer Barn, 14th Century Grade II* Listed Tithe Barn Conversion to Family Dwelling’.

These are large houses at 775 sqm each comprising: 7 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, including 2 rooms with walk-in cupboards (the master suite also incorporates a lounge); fully fitted Leicht kitchen and pantry; 3 reception rooms; dining room; lift, stair, study and gym within a communal area; staff and security guard bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and a laundry; as well as external areas for parking and front and rear gardens. The concept was to create a grand and open feeling home with an immediate connection from entrance to garden, whilst maintaining a sense of privacy and retreat. The family want to be able to relax or to entertain comfortably. Our brief for the interior was to create a modern but classic feeling home and we have responded with a simple palette of soft colours and natural materials – often with a twist on a traditional theme. Our design was very much inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement. The new houses blend in with the surroundings but stand out in terms of quality. Facades are predominantly buff facing brick with embedded niches. Deep blue engineering brick quoins highlight the building’s edges and soldier courses highlight window heads. Aluminium windows are powder-coated to match the facade and limestone cills underscore openings and cap the chimney. Gables are rendered off-white and patterned in relief and the dark blue clay tiled roof is striking. Overall, the impression of the house is bold but soft, clean and well proportioned, intimate and elegant despite its size.
