“We highly recommend architect Bruce Butler of By Design. He has been wonderful to work with, and we are delighted with our new home. We had never built a house before--nor did we think it was in the cards for us to do so--so we were complete novices when we began. Bruce was very patient with our lack of knowledge and did an excellent job of educating us on the process. Based on information he gathered from us, he presented us with an initial plan that matched our vision! After that, our discussions with him were primarily regarding materials and finishes.
Our dealings with Bruce were done from a distance as we lived a half-dozen states away from our building site. Regardless of this, the process was seamless. Bruce also effectively acted on our behalf with the town Planning Board and Code Enforcement Officer. Without making a single change, they signed off on our plans the very night he presented them. He also participated in our meetings with prospective builders and made field trips to see their work. Additionally, he was very proactive on pursuing cost- and energy-saving options.
We interviewed other architects before selecting Bruce. After the fact, one of the other firms asked us whom we selected. We told them and they said, "Bruce does great work, I think you'll be in good hands." There’s no question that we were!”

Lauren has great design skills which is completely obvious by viewing her portfolio. The equally as helpful (and likely more important) skills that she brings to the table are her attention to detail and her perseverance in dealing with the contractors. She is there at every meeting to crack the proverbial whip and is very responsive (NYC responsive ;) to email/ phone/ text.

“We chose Kelley based on what we saw on her website as well as houzz.com. Her style was consistent with what we were looking for. Her recommendations were stellar. One of them included a prominent person who has used her for multiple projects, both commercial and residential.
She designed a master plan for renovation for our home, which entailed moving the master bedroom over a garage, opening up the downstairs floorplan, kitchen expansion, mudroom, dormers. Her services included 3D sketch models and Construction documents.
She is a pleasant person, who is knowledgeable and confident, but not overbearing. She has many resources and also desired to work closely with our contractor. She really listened to what we were saying, and successfully incorporated design elements that were important to us. She is intuitive and read our needs well. She is budget conscious. The final cost of her service was consistent with what she listed on her estimate. We highly recommend her and anticipate using her for further services once construction commences.”

“For more than two years commencing in August 2002 I worked with Hope and Brad of Salmon Falls Woodworks to restore and renovate a large c1725 house my husband and I purchased in 2001. We lived in the house throughout the project, and what could have been fraught with tension and difficulty was a wonderful adventure. There is not a room in the house that they did not touch with their skill and care. The kitchen and laundry area presented a major design and construction challenge, but Brad and Hope transformed a warren of small dark rooms into a beautiful, sunny space that functions perfectly for two active cooks. While remaining true to the spirit and aesthetic of the house this space now has 21st century efficiency and satisfies our modern desire to connect the interior with the garden and landscape beyond.
