Studio Z Architecture
A major television network purchased a 1925 Craftsman-style bungalow in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to renovate into the prize for a televised giveaway. The network sought out Studio Z to re-imagine the 900-square-foot house into a modern, livable home that could remain timeless as the homeowner’s lifestyle needs evolved. Located in the historic Water Hill neighborhood within a few blocks of downtown Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan, the home’s walkability was a huge draw. The end result, at approximately 1,500 square feet, feels more spacious than its size suggests.

The client asked us to create a low maintenance, highly functional front entry to this beachfront retreat. As with most beach homes, guest parking is critical and creating an easy to navigate parking area is paramount to design success. We chose to maximize the front yard without turning it into a parking lot. Native crushed stone parking pads surrounded by sun loving, drought tolerant plants create exactly what the client was looking for.

Wiarton natural stone blends in nicely with the existing brick colours. The existing concrete porch has Wiarton building stone veneered to the sides with Random Wiarton flagstone bordered with thick Wiarton capping stone.

The square panel of irregular bluestone was placed on the diagonal axis with the urn to draw attention to it as a focal point in the garden.

We used the timber frame of a century old barn to build this rustic modern house. The barn was dismantled, and reassembled on site. Inside, we designed the home to showcase as much of the original timber frame as possible.
