Choate + Hertlein ArchitectsWood clad walls define the actual enclosure of the interior space, but do not necessarily rest on the floor or wrap all sides of the space. In contrast to the upright and vertical wood and concrete planes, a zinc-edged roof is decidedly horizontal, often extending beyond the enclosed space to create shade and echo the dramatic umbrella-like canopies of nearby trees.

Julie Moir Messervy Design Studio (JMMDS)JMMDS created a woodland garden for a contemporary house on a pond in a Boston suburb that blurs the line between traditional and modern, natural and built spaces. At the front of the house, three evenly spaced fastigiate ginkgo trees (Ginkgo biloba Fastigiata) act as an openwork aerial hedge that mediates between the tall façade of the house, the front terraces and gardens, and the parking area. JMMDS created a woodland garden for a contemporary house on a pond in a Boston suburb that blurs the line between traditional and modern, natural and built spaces. McKinney York ArchitectsThe client for this home wanted a modern structure that was suitable for displaying her art-glass collection. Located in a recently developed community, almost every component of the exterior was subject to an array of neighborhood and city ordinances. These were all accommodated while maintaining modern sensibilities and detailing on the exterior, then transitioning to a more minimalist aesthetic on the interior. The one-story building comfortably spreads out on its large lot, embracing a front and back courtyard and allowing views through and from within the transparent center section to other parts of the home. A high volume screened porch, the floating fireplace, and an axial swimming pool provide dramatic moments to the otherwise casual layout of the home.

This 2800 sf single-family home was completed in 2009. The clients desired an intimate, yet dynamic family residence that reflected the beauty of the site and the lifestyle of the San Juan Islands. The house was built to be both a place to gather for large dinners with friends and family as well as a cozy home for the couple when they are there alone.
The project is located on a stunning, but cripplingly-restricted site overlooking Griffin Bay on San Juan Island. The most practical area to build was exactly where three beautiful old growth trees had already chosen to live. A prior architect, in a prior design, had proposed chopping them down and building right in the middle of the site. From our perspective, the trees were an important essence of the site and respectfully had to be preserved. As a result we squeezed the programmatic requirements, kept the clients on a square foot restriction and pressed tight against property setbacks.
The delineate concept is a stone wall that sweeps from the parking to the entry, through the house and out the other side, terminating in a hook that nestles the master shower. This is the symbolic and functional shield between the public road and the private living spaces of the home owners. All the primary living spaces and the master suite are on the water side, the remaining rooms are tucked into the hill on the road side of the wall.
Off-setting the solid massing of the stone walls is a pavilion which grabs the views and the light to the south, east and west. Built in a position to be hammered by the winter storms the pavilion, while light and airy in appearance and feeling, is constructed of glass, steel, stout wood timbers and doors with a stone roof and a slate floor. The glass pavilion is anchored by two concrete panel chimneys; the windows are steel framed and the exterior skin is of powder coated steel sheathing.

Justin Loe ArchitectsGlass sliding doors and bridge that connects the master bedroom and ensuite with front of house. Doors fully open to reconnect the courtyard and a water feature has been built to give the bridge a floating effect from side angles. LED strip lighting has been embedded into the timber tiles to light the space at night.
Flavin ArchitectsModern glass house set in the landscape evokes a midcentury vibe. A modern gas fireplace divides the living area with a polished concrete floor from the greenhouse with a gravel floor. The frame is painted steel with aluminum sliding glass door. The front features a green roof with native grasses and the rear is covered with a glass roof.
