In south Seattle, a tiny backyard garden needed a makeover to add usability and create a sitting area for entertaining. Raised garden beds for edible plants provide the transition between the existing deck and new patio below, eliminating the need for a railing. A firepit provides the focal point for the new patio. Angles create drama and direct flow to the steel stairs and gate. Installed June, 2014.

The informal seating area in the front yard invites the gardener to rest in vibrant Blu Dot 'Hot Mesh' furniture amidst lush columnar apple trees, ceramic pots, and custom sculptural Corten steel beds hosting vegetables and dwarf blueberry shrubs. A seatwall clad in 'Mt. Moriah' ledge stone contains the space, punctuated by a large 'Windsor' boulder with native Polypodium californicum ferns at its feet. Photo © Jude Parkinson-Morgan.

Living Gardens Landscape Design
Our homeowners were looking for a garden where they could sit by the fire, grow vegetable and hear the sound of water. Their home was new construction in a modern farmhouse style. We used gravel and concrete as paving. Board formed concrete firepit keeps it feeling modern. The vegetable beds supply season vegetables and herbs.

AFTER...Because they are devout "foodies", we decided that that as much of the property as possible should be food producing. With that focus in mind, the front lawn became a vegetable garden. The installation was done by Sam Gomez of Gomez Landscaping. Caitlin Atkinson
The Ardent Gardener Landscape Design
A small herb and vegetable garden that will only get more beautiful as the raised steel beds rust. The steel helps heat up the soil in a short season landscape. Four 4' x 8' x 18" tall beds make for plenty of growing space and ease of gardening.
