From corporate to creative. Blaustein had a career in business administration and accounting, but she discovered a passion for interior design when she and her husband bought their first home. “We had a small budget and a big vision for how we wanted our home to look and feel,” she says. “I did all the planning and design, and I fell in love with the entire process.”
Emphasizing collaboration and client engagement. What Blaustein likes most is working with a variety of clients. “Young families or empty nesters, in the city, suburbs or the Hamptons, no project is ever the same, which makes every job really fun,” she says.
Even better? When her clients are eager to learn and ready to bring their own ideas to the table. “I love that, when clients are engaged and a part of the process, we end up pushing the limits and creating something even better through that open dialogue and collaboration,” Blaustein says.

1. Pair a Muted Palette with Bold Art or Accessories
A common misstep in interior design is when homeowners stop just shy of completing their designer’s vision because they’re missing one thing — art. “Eighty percent of projects stop at the art,” Blaustein says. “The art in your home can tell a story about who you are and adds life and personality to your space.” If you don’t have a collection of art to accentuate a more neutral color scheme, Blaustein suggests creating pops of color through your pillows, throws, the books on your coffee table and in your bookcase, and the tchotchkes you have throughout your home.
At this home in Rye, the client had a vast art collection he wanted to showcase. “We chose contemporary furnishings in a more muted palette so that they wouldn’t compete with his colorful and eye-catching art collection,” Blaustein says.

2. Don’t Crowd Your Space
For an open, flowing feel to your home, remember that less is more. Include only furnishings that function well specifically for you. “When I design, I start by considering who is living in the space and their lifestyle,” Blaustein says. “Does the family have small children? Are they empty nesters? Do they entertain a lot? Do they need a TV in every room?”
At this penthouse on the Upper West Side, Blaustein collaborated with the homeowners to push the envelope in terms of color while maintaining a minimalist, modern style that’s easy to move through. “It’s fun when it’s a negotiation,” Blaustein says. “They were very bold and pushed me to add elements like colorful chairs and a curved sofa and I pushed them not to go overboard. We found a lot of room to play in the middle.”

3. Invest Where It Counts
If you’re on a tight budget, feel comfortable spending less on less important spaces. “I advise my clients to consider where they spend most of their time, usually the communal areas where they watch TV or entertain, sometimes the primary suite,” Blaustein says. “I would spend less on kids’ rooms, where they’re likely to outgrow (or damage) whatever you choose.”
At this Modern Colonial home in Scarsdale, the homeowners focused their spending on eye-catching interior architecture and finishes. “They invested most in the stone fireplaces, the custom millwork in the kitchen and along the ceiling and in the customized hallway panels,” Blaustein says. “Everything else we tackled on a very reasonable budget.”
