Finding the right blend. Hammer design director Johanna Nguyen says happy homeowners inspire her. She advises clients to be open to options that may not completely match their perceived “perfect” design. “Perfection is the art of balancing the design between your needs, aesthetics, functionality and budget,” Nguyen says.
Accomplishing your goals. Designer Greg Buitrago adds that a remodel is a personal and important investment, so homeowners need to be comfortable and secure with the process and the team. “It’s a good thing to ask a lot of questions,” says Buitrago, who adds that his job is to figure out what works best for the homeowner while also guiding and educating them.
Looking for ways to create the right mix of style and personality in your home? Nguyen and Buitrago offer some tips below.

1. Explore Your Artistic Side
Add furniture and finishes that reflect your personal style. Here, “we collaborated with skilled artisans and architectural planners to transform functional items into unique works of art,” Nguyen says.
In the kitchen, Nguyen designed a custom wood table with a waterfall top that seats four (or six in a pinch). It’s a modern nod to the traditional family kitchen table. Amish custom cabinets get a more contemporary feel with soft green paint and brass hardware. The same brass accents continue with the wall sconces and one-of-a-kind pendant light over the table. “The space is very cozy, modernized and full of artistic details the homeowners love,” Nguyen says.

2. Enhance Natural Light
Create a floor plan that optimizes visibility as well as functionality. “The homeowners asked us to bring natural light into their D.C. row home,” Buitrago says.
With the only windows situated at either end of the long space, Buitrago looked upward for additional light. Skylights run the length of the home above the new three-story atrium in the center of the remodel. At night, uplighting along three sides of the atrium provides illumination. Metal railings keep the upper two floors from feeling too closed in. A final touch was adding two interior windows, which bring light to the second- and third-floor rooms at one end of the row house. “It’s a fun element,” Buitrago says.

3. Make Strategic Updates
Match new and existing elements to create a seamless whole. “This couple loved the character of their 1936 home but wanted to increase the space for their family,” Buitrago says.
He kept the core layout but increased the size of the kitchen. He carefully incorporated contemporary elements, including doors and finishes, so they would complement the original features. Buitrago also preserved part of the original brick exterior wall within the home’s interior. “It’s a subtle reminder of the original house that they fell in love with,” he says.
