Rethink Design StudioSecond story sleeping loft located on Tybee Island in Savannah, GA. Behind the white flowing curtains are built in beds each adorned with a nautical reading light and built-in hideaway niches. The space is light and airy with painted gray floors, all white walls, old rustic beams and headers, wood paneling, tongue and groove ceilings, dormers, vintage rattan furniture, mid-century painted pieces, and a cool hangout spot for the kids.

With a footprint of just 450 square feet, this micro residence embodies minimalism and elegance through efficiency. Particular attention was paid to creating spaces that support multiple functions as well as innovative storage solutions. A mezzanine-level sleeping space looks down over the multi-use kitchen/living/dining space as well out to multiple view corridors on the site. To create a expansive feel, the lower living space utilizes a bifold door to maximize indoor-outdoor connectivity, opening to the patio, endless lap pool, and Boulder open space beyond. The home sits on a ¾ acre lot within the city limits and has over 100 trees, shrubs and grasses, providing privacy and meditation space. This compact home contains a fully-equipped kitchen, ¾ bath, office, sleeping loft and a subgrade storage area as well as detached carport.
Anthology WoodsPainted White Reclaimed Wood wall paneling clads this guest sleeping space in an Oregon cottage. The beams above the bed are weathered gray Douglas Fir sourced from Anthology Woods. A library ladder provides access to the storage loft above, and the vaulted space has a reclaimed wood feature wall. Generous windows bathe the space in bright natural light.

Hammer & HandHammer & Hand transformed an ordinary garage in Southeast Portland into an energy-efficient, sustainably-built art studio and living space in this Accessory Dwelling Unit conversion designed by Departure Design. A custom sliding door assembly provides a cost-effective and water-tight solution for creating living space while maintaining future garage function, if desired. The small-but-spacious garage conversion also features a sleeping loft with ballusters built from wine barrel staves for the wine enthusiast owners.
